A crane is a machine that can lift, move or lower heavy materials by the use of cables and pulleys. A crane is fruitful in the construction industry due to the ease and convenience it has brought up. Since these are also supportive for construction projects of inaccessible areas and high-rise buildings, the crane manufacturing company has developed a lot since the dawn of civilization.
What Are Some Types of Cranes used for Construction?
- Vehicle Mounted Crane:
Cranes that are used only during construction work have temporary structures. So, these temporary structures are mounted on vehicles to facilitate easy movement. A majority of the crane is mounted on trucks except for the heavier ones. Rubber is used to make the wheels of such vehicle-mounted cranes. The wheeled vehicles can proceed rapidly than the trucked ones but the limitation is that they cannot be used for uneven regions. To procure stability to the crane while working, the base of the vehicle is usually provided with outriggers.
- Crawler Crane: These cranes have a very high lifting capacity varying from 40 tons-3500 tons. It is a movable crane as the name implies but the movement is carried out by the use of tracks. Therefore, these do not require outriggers to achieve stability. Since it moves with the help of the tracked system, therefore, it can move up to any site in soft soils. It can travel with load and is therefore used for heavy load transportation in the construction site.
- Tower Crane: These types of cranes are extensively used for the construction work of buildings and towers as these can work in heights ranging from 230-250 feet. It has a lifting capacity of about 20 tons and is attached to the ground during the construction project. It is attached to the ground with help of a strong concrete base that can be fastened by large bolts and can be removed handily after the construction project.
- Rough Terrain Crane: A rough terrain crane is usually used for construction projects near rough terrain areas as the name implies. It is also commonly employed for off-road construction work. It is a special tier of the vehicle-mounted crane. Specifically designed rubber tires and outriggers are used for this crane. The outriggers are given at the base of the vehicle so that they can impart stability to the vehicle while working.
- All Terrain Crane: It is provided with more wheels than a standard vehicle but despite it, they can balance the vehicle in rough terrains without any overturn.
- Railroad Crane: As the name implies, it is used for the construction, repair, and maintenance of railway lines and railroads. It has flanged wheels at the bottom to facilitate easy movement only in the railway tracks.
- Telescopic Handler Crane: The telescopic handler cranes are commonly used to lift and handle pallets of bricks, for the installation of steel trusses at a height, etc. It has a forklift kind of part at the end of its boom. The most outstanding feature is that this crane part is rotatable up to 360 degrees. It is also provided with outriggers at its base.
